At Buduburam Refugee Camp, Accra, Ghana
At Buduburam Refugee Camp, Accra, Ghana
This is the camp, where I met Lulu's Mom and Brother (Shedrick, he's in the red jersey) and some of their long time neighbors. Everyone was very nice to me. It was very hot, so just being in that heat was hard on me. Can you tell by the way I act? This was, however, a very good experience. After so long of hearing about the camp on the phone, I finally got to see it in real life. The roads in the camp area are all dirt, and have some big potholes. In the last few years, they got electricity, but it's not on 24 hours. They have to walk to a central place to get water. The houses are very small and made from mud brick, and painted green. Malaria is a very big concern there because there is no sewer system. It was an amazing experience being there, and I wish I could go again some day.

Accra Talks final day press conference
Accra Talks final day press conference
Briefing the media on the final day of the Talks, Yvo de Boer gave an upbeat assessment of progress made: "We're still on track, the process has speeded up and governments are becoming very serious about negotiating a result in Copenhagen." The debate on the important topic of deforestation and forest conservation, he said, had resulted in countries expressing the clear desire for this issue to be part of a Copenhagen agreement. Further important discussions focused on what can be done to improve the clean development mechanism (CDM). Mr. de Boer cited insufficient investment in Africa as one of the shortcomings of the CDM now being addressed. On the controversial issue of sectoral approaches, he said that a constructive debate had made it clear that sectoral approaches were not about imposing targets on developing countries. The absolute highlight of the session, Mr. de Boer said, had been the mandate given by governments to the Chair of the working group on long-term cooperative action to compile proposals made so far and to be made in the coming weeks. As a result of this mandate, the achievement of the Accra meeting had been in "providing the basis for real negotiations to begin in Poznań."

Accra Talks opening press conference
Accra Talks opening press conference
In a press conference held on the opening day, the UN's top climate change official underlined the urgency of progress in the Talks on the main elements of a strengthened international climate change deal set to be concluded in Copenhagen. "Negotiations need to speed up and become more concrete if Governments are to meet the 2009 deadline they have set for themselves," he said. Mr. de Boer highlighted the importance of this meeting taking place in Africa, a continent particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. African countries, he said, had the opportunity to make a real contribution to the design of a strengthened Copenhagen agreement based on their needs. The main task for the negotiating group under the Kyoto Protocol in Accra is to consider the types of tools for cost-effective emission reductions of industrialized countries beyond 2012, in order to pave the way for negotiations on emission reduction ranges in Poznań in December. Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries will be among several key issues for the negotiating group on long-term cooperative action under the Convention. "Accra needs to produce concrete proposals to be included in a draft text for Copenhagen," Mr. de Boer said, stressing that "time is short and the clock is clearly ticking."

Ghana 2001/2002 part 4 Accra to Volta/Kpandu
Ghana 2001/2002 part 4 Accra to Volta/Kpandu
Video starts at Atimpoku market then crossing Volta river, entering Volta Region. The town is Kpandu (or Kpando) where I taught Chemistry for 2 years in 1994-86. since then, I have visited the school twice including this visit. In 84/86, I used to use public transportations, buses. It took 5 hours from capital city Accra to Kpandu without aircon. Buses start when seats are full. I waited in a bus under blaze of the sun, without aircon, for hours before even leaving Accra. But by private car, it took 2 hours, one way. Simply because buses are slow and stops many places,,,,,
